How to Prepare Data for Cooling Tower Sizing
A good selection starts with good input data. The more complete the data, the faster you receive a reliable recommendation.
What to prepare
- Heat load or flow rate: the cooling capacity, or the water flow in m³/h.
- Inlet and outlet temperature: the water or fluid temperature entering and leaving the tower.
- Design wet-bulb temperature: the site design condition for the tower location.
- Fluid and water quality: the process fluid, and the make-up water analysis.
- Noise limit and space: any noise requirement and the installation area.
- Material preference: FRP, galvanized steel, or 304 / 316 stainless steel.
- Power supply and quantity: voltage, frequency and number of units.
Why the wet-bulb temperature matters
A cooling tower can cool water only down to a temperature above the wet-bulb temperature. The difference is called the approach. A smaller approach needs a larger tower, so the design wet-bulb temperature has a big effect on size.
Special requirements
Mention anything unusual: explosion-proof areas, freezing winters, plume restrictions, variable frequency control or automation. These change the design and are easier to include at the start.
